HISTORY
Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 proudly protects an area of 87 square miles. We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.
Founded in 1956, Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 is one of three fire companies located in Lawrence Township. The Township is made up of three areas, Hyde, Glen Richey, and the rest of which is our main coverage area. In our main coverage area there are residential, commercial and industrial properties and a large section of the township is comprised of State Game Lands. We cover 12 miles of Interstate 80.
Our company was formed by people living in the Township who felt that they could provide better and quicker fire protection for their families and neighbors than the neighboring Clearfield Boro Fire Department. Although many of the firemen already belonged to, and still belong to the Clearfield Boro Fire Department, they felt it was time to break out on their own. That was the beginning of Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. In the early years it was referred to as Plymptonville Fire Company because it was first housed at the Plymptonville School. Two years later, The company purchased the land inwhich it is located today on millroad. Over the years, the company has grown from one used engine and a few concerned citizens to a company that has 2 engines, 1 rescue/pumper, and 1 brush truck. The building has also grown. It is now two buildings, which house the equipment, a recycling building, a social room, and an office. The company is located so as to make quick response to State Routes 322, 153, and Interstate 80.
Locally, the company is referred to as Clearfield County Station Five, as that is the way it is dispatched by the Clearfield County 911 Center. The members of the company refer to their hall as the Millroad Madhouse.
Recently, over the past 6 years, Rescue coverage has grown extensively at Station 5. We now cover all of Lawrence Township and Pine Township for Rescue coverage.
Also, the last four years, the company has become part of the computer age. Being one of the first in the area to join the National Fire Incident Reporting System.
